Heritage Grants

The City of Port Adelaide Enfield, through its Heritage Grants Program aims to encourage owners of Local Heritage Places and Representative Buildings to maintain, conserve or restore places of local heritage significance.

The SA Department for Environment and Water has compiled a Register of Heritage Trades and Consultants intended to assist heritage owners to find the right contractors to undertake specialised heritage work.

How much can you apply for?

A maximum of 50% of the cost of the conservation work, (capped at a maximum amount of $3,000 per grant) may be approved to eligible applicants.

The grant is paid as a reimbursement once the proposed conservation works have been completed satisfactorily. Please note that no work can commence until applicants are advised in writing by Council of the outcome of their Heritage Grant application.

Timeframes

Applications for the Heritage Grant program open on 1st July 2024

The program is open all year long or until the yearly budget allocation is exhausted.

Before submitting your application you are strongly encouraged to discuss your proposed heritage conservation works with our Heritage Advisor on 8405 6600 or email heritage.grants@cityofpae.sa.gov.au. Please note our Heritage  Advisor is only available on Wednesdays.

Applications can be submitted at any time while the program is open and will be assessed on an ongoing basis. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application within four weeks from submission. Successful applicants will be required to complete the conservation works within six months of the date of their approval and submit an online grant acquittal form, including copies of paid invoice(s) as well as photos of completed works. If the works are deemed appropriate by Council’s Heritage Advisor, a reimbursement will be made within 4 weeks.

Eligibility & Assessment criteria

Heritage Grants are available to applicants who:

  • Own a property (within PAE) listed as either a Local Heritage Place or Representative Building on the SA Heritage Places Database and
  • Plan to undertake conservation works (valued to at least $1,000) to the exterior of the building that has a visible impact on the streetscape

Please refer to the grant guidelines for other eligibility requirements.

If your application is eligible, Council's Heritage Advisor will evaluate how the proposed works fit with the priority levels shown in the table below.

Required structural works having a streetscape impact

Essential or urgent conservation work of a structural nature required to preserve the original building fabric of a Local Heritage Place or Representative Building that may be lost or diminished without the work being undertaken in a timely fashion.

This work makes (or would make) a significant contribution to the building and streetscape character.

Examples include:

* structural repair works to walls, floors, roofs, chimneys verandahs, balconies

* salt damp application and associated repair

* stormwater management

* stone or brick replacement and repair

* original masonry front wall repair

* crack repair

* structural timber replacement

* re-roofing and gutter replacement

* removal of acrylic paint from original timber, brick or stone and repainting in a breathable paint

2.

Non-structural conservation works having a streetscape impact

Non-structural conservation work required to preserve aspects of a Local Heritage Place or Representative Building that makes (or would make) a notable contribution to the streetscape character.

Examples include:

* repointing original brickwork and stonework

* render repair

* non-structural timber replacement

* timber window repair or replacement (where visible from the street)

* reinstatement of roof gable treatments

* cast iron lacework repair or reinstatement

* repair or reinstatement decorative timberwork

* front fence repairs to original fencing

* repair of existing verandah floor tiles

* changing the paint scheme to heritage colours where clear evidence is provided such as a paint scraping

3.

Non-urgent reconstruction works having a streetscape impact

Reconstruction work required to deliver authentic enhancement to aspects of a Local Heritage Place or Representative Building based on historic evidence that makes (or would make) a notable contribution to the streetscape character.

Examples include:

* front fencing where it can be demonstrated the proposed fence is appropriate to the era of the associated dwelling

* verandah floor tiles where there is clear evidence of original tiling

* a verandah installation where there is clear evidence of the original form

If you're a new user, you will need to start by registering a new account. Once registered and logged in you will be redirected to the "Before you Begin" page where you can start your application.

Applicants can only apply online when funding rounds are open. Support or access to computers and the internet can be provided if required.
